..HEAD and HEAD.. would almost work, except that StGit patch ranges are inclusive at both ends.

If we had some numbering syntax for patches, we could have one mode where HEAD was 0, HEAD^ was -1, etc. Then applied and unapplied would be ..0 and 1.., respectively.

OTOH, those flags woulc surely better be implemented as special ranges.
