Thu 08 Oct 2009 06:37:35 PM UTC, original submission:

Being an old fan of ASCII art I set my name/resource for a chat room to:

"^|^" : /\/\

when the xmpp4r based bot attempts to respond to a private message with Jabber::debug = true it shows the following reply from the server:

<message from='room@example.com/&amp;amp;quot;^|^&amp;amp;quot; : /\/\' type='error' to='bot@bots.example.com/thebot' xml:lang='en'><body>available commands: exit, help, info, reboot, run</body><error code='404' type='cancel'><item-not-found xmlns='urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:xmpp-stanzas'/><text xmlns='urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:xmpp-stanzas'>Recipient is not in the conference room</text></error></message>

Using PSI/Adium (libpurple based client) I can talk between two nicks but using xmpp4r I can not.

My guess is that there is some over-zealous escaping going on and that &amp;amp;quot; is the suspicious string above. There are previous replies with just &amp;quot; which means that &entity is probably not being handled correctly.
