[We're migrating MyPaint's bugs to Github, and I'm wandering through the thicket of old bugs triaging stuff. Please excuse the mess and annoyance.]

For the PNG case: WON'T FIX. That's expected behaviour for transparent PNGs, and you won't see it if you save solid PNG...

If you want layers, use OpenRaster. But for the OpenRaster case, I can confirm that this is still happening.

So, this is still an active bug. I've migrated it to https://github.com/mypaint/mypaint/issues/10 on the new tracker, and included an updated set of steps to reproduce. Closing this bug in favour of the new one now: please subscribe in the new location if you're still interested in tracking this one.

Actually the same bug also happens with OpenRaster.

In contrast to PNG, you would usually not have re-activate the same background, because it gets loaded properly as background pattern. But if you do, it gets shifted with no way to recover.

That's why you should save to OpenRaster instead of PNG.

This works for small backgrounds only because mypaint always adds padding to the next tile. We could store the background offset as a PNG property, maybe. It feels a bit like a hack...

Steps to reproduce:

1) Start MyPaint, load one of the "patterned" Background images (e.g. the comic-page template or movie storyboard template patterns).
2) Work with these background as reference, e.g create a comic page.
3) Save as PNG. Shut down MyPaint.
4) Start MyPaint and load your work again. Re-activate the same background as before.

In this last step I find that the background is now shifted half a comic-page relative to the open PNG image, making it impossible to continue working. It seems the origin point of the PNG image has changed relative to the background.
