Sun 28 Nov 2010 06:37:30 PM UTC, comment #6: FWIW, i've not seen this in building on 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6. I've also not gotten a single bad report from users of fink's freeciv package.
Fri 26 Nov 2010 09:48:21 PM UTC, comment #5: Yes, this bug has been around for a long time - at least a year. But I've waited to report it since it was blocked by bug #15559 .
The stand-alone 2.2.3 OS X package is working fine, however. So the bug may have something to do with the build environment or linked libraries on my Macbook.

Phew :)

Thu 25 Nov 2010 11:54:32 PM UTC, original submission: Mac OS X 10.6.4, S2_2 and S2_3.
Hitting "Start New Game" in the client causes the client to freeze.
In S2_2 the client crashes after a few minutes, with "Terminated" in the terminal.
In S2_3 you get control back after a while, but you're still stuck on the start screen.
In both cases, there's a freeciv-server process left running taking near 100% of the processor that has to be killed manually.
