Frame interaction now happens via an interaction mode with a dialog as described in comment 1. Cursors reflect what happens when you click and drag, and the command can be bound to a pointer button too. If a modifier is held when the mode enters, the dialog doesn't appear and the mode lasts only for as long as you hold down the modifiers: all adjustment must happen on-screen.

Probably ought to get this done as part of bug #18574. Links set...

Sounds all very sensible to me. To make GIMP happy, we should also accept the return key to confirm, and escape to cancel the mode/dialog.

Ruminations on the mailing list; we may need a more global concept of a canvas interaction mode first: https://mail.gna.org/public/mypaint-discuss/2011-07/msg00030.html

However we do it, painting should probably be forbidden when interacting with the frame handles or controls in case the user dabs by accident. What about:

  • user enters Frame Edit mode
  • - sizer dialog pops up with a "Done" button (and maybe Cancel)
  • - canvas becomes unpaintable, extra lines are drawn for the frame with standard-looking handles
  • user plays with the dialog figures and/or messes with the on-canvas controls.
  • - Frame is updated
  • user presses Done, or toggles Frame Edit mode off by pressing its Action key
  • - sizer dialog disappears, canvas becomes paintable once more; frame is drawn normally

Does this make sense for an interaction pattern?

Right now the frame is moved by pressing an obscure key combination, and then dragging it around on the canvas. Manipulating the size can only be done using the frame dialog.

This less than ideal. The frame interaction, both move and resize should instead happen on-canvas, similar to of what GIMP, Shotwell et.c. does.
