We could also get rid of "hide layers above current". It seemed like a nice idea, but I don't think it is useful enough (of course I don't know how other users see it...). But keep layer solo, I use this from time to time.

The visibility toggles in the layers dialog (the eye buttons) do not reflect layer visibility in Layer Solo or Hide Layers Above Current modes. Probably they should in some way.

We may want to go further than this and implement the guts of the two modes above using layer visibility directly, and either leave or enter them using the layer dialog and clicks on the eye buttons. How does:

  • (In LS or HLAC modes) toggle any eye button, leave either mode
  • Shift-click the current layer to toggle LS mode
  • Ctrl-click the current layer to toggle HLAC mode

sound? I recall vaguely the GIMP doing something like the latter two, might be worth investigating.
