(On starting a standalone server, this is.)

Just tried both cproc's r24327 test build and cazfi's S2_4 r24328 crosser build (with win32stack-0.12).

cproc's build did not show the issue but cazfi's did show it:

Same Windows 7 install as before. This time I can confirm it was not connected to a network.

Maybe relevant information about conditional compilation around the failing call about crosser builds (from fc_config.h)

IPV6_SUPPORT not defined
HAVE_INET_ATON not defined

The whole message is there, but you have to select the text and drag right to see it (dodgy CSS?)

"An unknown, invalid, or unsupported option or level was specified in a getsockopt or setsockopt call."

I think I get something like this on Linux when starting Freeciv with no Internet connection; it's quite possible that Windows didn't have access to the Internet this time (it often doesn't).

Was the end of error message eaten by gna formatting, or does it really not tell what is invalid?

This comes from sernet.c:server_open_socket() and as you suspected it's part of setting up game announcement socket.

Noticed with cazfi's trunk build (r20045) on Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit: on starting the server, I get:

Also visible briefly in the client when it spawns a server.

I think I've seen this previously with other versions, probably S2_3 builds. Haven't checked yet if it's just cazfi's builds or cproc's as well.

I'm guessing this is something to do with the LAN scan. When I started a server and a separate client, the server didn't show up on the scan.
