Yes, with Unity under Ubuntu 12.10 and 91e0659 (2012-12-06).

Steps to reproduce

  • Get MyPaint running on Ubuntu 12.10, under Unity. Starting from a fresh config:
  • (optional) Open one or more floating subwindows, e.g. the colors window.
  • Fullscreen, which hides the subwindows.
  • (method 1, if subwindows used) Press tab to reveal subwindows.
  • (method 2) press "b" for the brush chooser dialog.

Expected behaviour

  • (method 1) subwindows appear. Menu bar and Unity launcher do not.
  • (method 2) brush chooser appears. Menu bar and Unity launcher do not.

Observed behaviour

  • (method 1) subwindows appear. Menu bar and Unity launcher appear. MyPaint icon in the launcher wiggles.
  • (method 2) brush chooser appears. Menu bar and Unity launcher appear. MyPaint icon in the launcher wiggles.
  • To restore normal fullscreen appearance, it's necessary to first hide all decorated subwindows, and then draw on the canvas.

This doesn't happen for popup colour selectors (e.g. the ones on "C" and "V"), or for the popup color picker window ("R", or Ctrl+Button1 by default), or for the dropdown panels on the toolbar if you choose not to hide the toolbar, or for the menu on the on-toolbar menu button. All of which are window-manager-decorationless windows.

One fairly serious annoyance: if the user retains the toolbar in fullscreen mode, then whenever Unity imposes itself on the display, its menubar obscures the MyPaint toolbar. Combined with the final "Observed" bullet point, this can be very annoying.

To be honest, this is all probably expected behaviour from Unity, and since I don't actually run Unity day to day I'm not particularly interested in chasing it down. The only things I can think of to take away from this are possibly some UI tweaks to make things nicer for Unity users:

  • Make the "B" brush chooser borderless, integrating it into the popup window system better. Or just make it a decorationless popup with its own close button. Mind you, it's a window that's designed to go away quickly when the selection is made and not get in the way, so perhaps this isn't really a problem.
  • Rely less on floating windows, and revisit the ability to dock windows into the sidebar. Sidebars on both sides plus tabs would be more flexible (and closer to the way Gimp does it...), and users have already expressed a desire to have more than one colour selector tab visible at once - palette and a fancy-chooser, typically. Draggable tabs may be a more GTK3-friendly way of handling things, too.

The former is probably more achievable in a short time.

Andrew, does this still happen with git master on newer Ubuntu versions?

Just documenting some odd Unity behaviour that may be gone by Ubuntu 11.10 really. It seems minor, looks like an upstream bug, and there's perhaps not a lot we can or should do about it.

When focusing a non-popup subwindow with decorations when MyPaint is in fullscreen mode, Unity's left-hand side Launcher and top Menu bar appear over the top of MyPaint's fullscreen window while the cursor is inside the subwindow. It goes away again when focus moves back to the main window.

This affects the Brush List Editor, the Layers list, or the quick Brush Changer - the latter of which is currently a dialog.

This does not happen for the Color Rings popup or the Color Changer, which are decorationless popups. It also doesn't affect the dropdown panels on the toolbar.
