Sorry for the lack of feedback or an implementation. Lack of developer time, I'm afraid.

One minor update here: we're moving this bug tracker over to Github to allow the development focus to move somewhere with lots of eyeballs and developer interest. As such, I'm migrating this wish over because it's such a frequently requested feature.

The new location is https://github.com/mypaint/mypaint/issues/31 - please subscribe over there if you have an interest in this bug. I'm closing down this old copy now.

This bug tracker will shortly be moving to github. As part of this
process, we're reviewing old bug reports on gna.org and moving
them over. Please report new bugs at the new locations:

https://github.com/mypaint/mypaint/issues for the mypaint app, or
https://github.com/mypaint/libmypaint/issues for its brushlib

Does the linked bug being closed mean this is a feature that MyPaint will see soon? I think the feature is of utter importance, since one of the advantages of drawing through a computer is being able to make modifications without remaking a drawing.

I'm marking this as a wish against 1.0.0, since that's the latest stable release and in current git we actually have some partial support for simple layer translations.

Current situation, as of git ab1c617e: there is a prefs option to bind shuffling the current layer around to a [key + ]mouse button + drag combination. This ought to be fairly helpful, since it can be combined with layer clone, eraser, and merge down to allow you to move just a bit of a drawing you like.

Obviously I don't want to do anything destructive using such direct interactions.

Really we need a reworking of the way the user interacts with the canvas and some (lightweight, understandable) modes if we're to ever to consider this: see bug #18574 for some rough thoughts.

Okay, this is a slightly obvious, yet slightly important one:

Sometimes, an artist may wish to simply move something they had drawn, either to make room for something else, or to reposition something mispositioned.

This cannot be done unless there are tools to create a selection (either through circles, squares, freeform, etc.), and cut/copy/paste/move/otherwise transform it (or the entire layer's contents)

As long as its not as overly complicated as The GIMP's excuse for this feature (which requires going through 3 different tools to move/resize/etc.), this would be great.
