While the patch removes the problem, it causes another, albeit small. Now subtitleeditor won't open video files specified in command line (or when invoked through file type association), complaining about unknown encoding. When opening the same video file from subtitleeditor menu bar, after the program has fully started, it works without problems. It seems that subtitleeditor tries to open a video file before some gstreamer subsystems are fully initialized.

Thanks to Tomáš, we track this one.

We suspect a gstreamermm bug or (ubuntu/debian).

Fixed with this patch (around).

Now with newer versions of gstreamer in Ubuntu 12.10, it does not work anymore (not even a 50 attempts at opening a video file result in success, it always crashes down). There are some interesting stacktraces on the gnome bug, I would really appreciate if someone looked into this as subtitleeditor is currently unusable (at least on Ubuntu). I would do it myslef if I knew how.

This bug is driving me nuts. Sometimes I try opening a file 20+ times until it finally works. Happens only in subtitle editor. Totem is fine. I'm opening small videos, only a few minutes long.

Turns out this is a bug in libgstreamer0.10:

The same happens here with both version 39 and 40. While trying to open a video file subtitleeditor freezes. Terminal outputs:

      • glibc detected *** subtitleeditor: malloc(): memory corruption (fast): 0x00000000026afd60 ***

Tail of debug level 5 log:

0:00:09.400362321 13513 0x1912700 DEBUG default gstelement.c:291:gst_element_base_class_init: type GstPlayBin2 : factory 0x1b97ea0

Memory protection fault (core dumped)

System:

3.2.0-30-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 24 16:52:48 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Subtitle Editor:

subtitleeditor 0.39.0-2
libsubtitleeditor0 0.39.0-2

Some videos crash Subtitle editor everytime I try to load them saying:

      • glibc detected *** /home/drew/Sources/subtitleeditor-0.40.0/src/.libs/lt-subtitleeditor: malloc(): memory corruption: 0x00000000024608d0 ***

Notably, when I load some other video first, these videos then usually load just find. I can provide the video (they are 250MB, but I can upload them somewhere) and I would like to provide a better stacktrace, but I am not sure how to do that.
