I don't think we need to fix anything here. We can't fix anything at all in MyPaint 1.0.0, and unless we completely change the format again, newer brushes will just work.

Except for unsupported settings, which will be "silently" ignored (we actually do print a complaint to stdout). If the brush format has changed so much that it's incompatible, we revert the brush to the default brush, which is a pretty clear "it's not compatible, sorry" message to the user.

If we would be showing a dialog instead, you would see that dialog every damn time at startup until you figure out which file/brush/devbrush you have to remove - not much nicer for users.

So, I think the current solution is pragmatic and should work well for 90% of the use cases.

Anything needed here for the 1.1 release? If not, let's close the bug or postpone any action.

The possible brush settings didn't change, only the brush file format. In theory, git and 1.0.0 brushes are still fully compatible.

Obviously we cannot fix this in MyPaint 1.0.0 any more. But maybe we should add a compatibility warning for future versions. A simple version check would probably be too bothersome, it would warn way too often if brushes are actually compatible. (I'm a bit surprised that you didn't get an exception actually.)

I tried importing some brushes I made in the development version of mypaint of ubuntu into an older version(april development) version of mypaint in windows.
I already had half of the brushes there, and as far as I know, I didn't use anything that was unknown to the old version of mypaint, because there hasn't been setting changes since then.

All brushes I made new in the ubuntu version didn't come out right, rather, they reverted to some sort of 'default'. Of the brushes that were already in the windows version, some of them also reverted to that same default, even though I hadn't changed them in ubuntu.

In the newer git version(the one that lags) I found my brushes were working properly(even though lagging).

Because IIRC there was some change to the brush engine, this isn't too surprising. However, I was thinking, maybe it's an idea to let mypaint warn the user when the brush package was made in a newer version of mypaint? Ideally, backwards compatibility would be liked for brushes that don't use 'new' effects, but the warning would be nice too.
