I'll do that, and thanks for your time.

I understand you and agree that we should have better ways of finding and adding backgrounds. We have a bug for that here: https://gna.org/bugs/?17844
I think solving that is a much better solution that to handle the case of the pre-installed backgrounds gracefully. So I am closing this bug in favor of that one.
Please do comment on it to describe how you would like background management to work!

Well, if I just leave them there, the menu of backgrounds is very big. And I might take more time to find the backgrounds that I like (some of which I made myself), so I got rid of the ones that I'm never going to use anyway.

Also, it seems intuitive that if I can add backgrounds I like to the folder, I should also be able to remove backgrounds I don't. And I could, save for one.

You are here deleting the backgrounds that come installed with MyPaint. I'm not sure if this is something we should handle. What is your motivation for doing this?

Ah I see.

On one hand I think it might even be desireable to be able to edit this file (I suppose it can be edited without problems) if one wants a different background for that mode, but on the other hand it would be good to have it in a different folder (having it as a resource would mean it would not be editable. I don't mind, but just changing the folder should be very simple).

Right now it's hard-coded for being used in Layer Solo mode(press 'Home' key - background will be changed to 03_check1).

According to comments, it's temporary though.

As a fan of customization, I decided it to be best to delete all backgrounds in the ./backgrounds folder of MyPaint, and insert my own.

However, deleting them made MyPaint not to start anymore. After some trial-and-error, I pinpointed just one background to be causing this: "03_check1.png".

So if I delete it, MyPaint does not start. It is not my default background, and I didn't even ever use it.

It seems like it must be hard-coded somewhere.
