[Off topic] I kept sketching a lot in Mypaint last days ( after a month away in Krita to try to fully adapt to a single solution ). Infinite canvas, sharp rendering, subtle 'slow position tracking' and near fullscreen workflow have still an advantage on Mypaint side. Also the fact I can't deform or select and move part of the drawing force me to a stronger self discipline and this attention make me improve drawing skill...[/Off topic]

I use here 'Circle (light outline)' (in pref ) and I 'm totally fine with it in my drawing session with set#2 pen. I feel it like an improvement over 1.0 serie now.
Thanks for the preference menu added for satisfying other users preferences.

About your questions :

>> Do we need a "Custom" prefs item which allows you to enter colours and line widths directly?

I don't think it's needed. Even, for a simplier GUI ; the 3 radio button could be a single slider ( left light ; right bold )

>> Is the heaviest of the 3 circle cursors heavy enough for fancy high-res displays?

I guess we have to wait a user with a 'Retina' display, with a recent build running on OsX. ( ref : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retina_Display ) Here I tested as I could ; I have a Galaxy Note, with a high PPI ( higher than 300 ) so also higher than a high res display ( around 200 ). Here is my test picture : http://wstaw.org/m/2013/02/13/mypaint-bold.png , I read it at 100% pixel size on my smartphone, and the cursor was ok . ( My bold simulation test is way too bold ).

>> Are the mode icons for the crosshair cursor right?

Here I don't paint with a first person shooter crosshair, so I can't say ^_^ probably, other user might like a drop down list widget here with other cursors available : plain black triangle, pencil icon, single pixel... But I'm bad for feedback about it, as I'm not a user of cursor icon ; I'm a circle 'outliner' user...

Implemented in current git master (c1191b1), but a few options remain unexplored:

  • Do we need a "Custom" prefs item which allows you to enter colours and line widths directly?
  • Is the heaviest of the 3 circle cursors heavy enough for fancy high-res displays?
  • Are the mode icons for the crosshair cursor right?

Feedback encouraged... :D

Good idea and thanks for let user choose a preset on this cursor topic, 'bold' cursor can add also more comfort on live presentation when Mypaint is screen-projected.

With my experimentation with the Nvidia display bug with cursor ( anti-aliasing shadow , more info bug #20415 ), I found on the way a good looking outlined black cursor on both side with a 1px white line on the middle :
Very similar to your proposition in comment #3 / bug #20427, but with inner_width +0.25, visually more pleasant here.

PS : I suggest also a 'extra-bold' preset very large for new generation of laptop with high-res screen fashion, a la Apple 'Retina' resolution.

Followup to bug 20415. The Cairo cursors can be configured using a bunch of detailed settings.json keys for which there is no configuration UI. It would be nice to have some preset menu items of prefs dialog stuff to control them:

  • "Feint", with plenty of alpha, thin lines and small minimum sizes. For users with good eyesight who want very subtle cursors.
  • "Normal". Reasonably visible; largely the same as the old style. Reasonably free of the nVidia rendering bug too: lowering the alpha of any white edges seems to make it more tolerable.
  • "Bold". Strongly visible, thick lines. Good for users with poor eyesight, or who just like to sit further away from their screen.
