I checked openSuse 12.3 and its affected also, but ubuntu 13.04 is not.
(openSuse uses xorg-server 1.13.2, ubuntu 1.13.3, I checked also 1.14 and 1.12.4 , 1. 13.4 on gentoo and all of them failed, so its not xorg issue)
probably some gtk library causes that, gtk3/qt client are ok, it's visible only in trident in gtk2, maybe someone has any clue which package can cause that ?

Can u check your /proc/mtrr ?
if u see all mem uncachable, u should fix that (probably in bios, or by
mtrr cleanup in kernel) and check if it helped for freeciv.

One more comment:
on xorg 1.14.0 on trunk its almost ok also,
vertical lines ( some violet ) are shown only when grid is enabled in both versions
( 2.3.4 and trunk ),
I bet those lines will disappear with next or maybe next next xorg-server version.

I can confirm it, a bit :D
For me 2.3.4 on gentoo doesn't show any lines,
but on trunk yes,
I had earlier similar issues but its related to xorg-server, some versions work ok, some not, thats all strange ( as far I remeber those lines are only with trident, amplio is ok )
( now I have 1.14.0 ), probably changing some nvidia-options or xorg option would fix it.

This looks quite a lot like the symptom reported in bug #20411... --jtn

I used to use an open source driver for my graphics card, and everything was fine. But after buying a better card I started using the proprietary Nvidia driver. This had an unusual effect on freeciv-gtk2 and on freeciv only, thus I file this as a bug here. Namely, these weird vertical lines started showing:
It gets worse if I enable the grid:

I use Gentoo Linux for this computer. This bug has been present for maybe 3 months now, and occurs in freeciv only, as far as I noticed.
