Mm. I encountered a similar symptom with the Gtk2 client (see my forum post] where the server disconnected the client with "buffer overflow" (which means too much data had backed up in the server's network socket because the client was slow to handle it). Perhaps you're seeing the same? (Running a separate server would show this.)

Maybe the general extra sluggishness of the Gtk3 client is tipping it over the edge for you. (Perhaps we can hope for patch #4590 to have improved that?)

Ok. freeciv-gtk2 in 2.4.2 now starts with no problems (well besides taking a very long time), but freeciv-gtk3 in 2.4.2 still has (what appears to be) the same problem.

Try upgrading to 2.4.2. It has fixes for a cause of this specific symptom (see for instance bug #18532). --jtn

The map is from the GM1530 Scenarios modpack from freeciv-modpack. I can start a game with reveal map set to off (haven't played it yet though, so it may crash later).

The server output on game start is:

The freeciv-sdl client doesn't crash on start, but is unplayable because the "mini-map" takes up the entire screen.
