Don't do that. Now that datafile formats have been frozen, datasubdir was changed from 'test' to '2.6' for a reason; there's complete compatibility break between the two, so contents of the two directories should be kept separate.

Solved problem, I renamed 2.5.99 to a (dummy) 2.6.0-beta0 to make my scripts happy, and linked ~/.freeciv/test to ~/.freeciv/2.6 to collect future 2.6 stuff.

Off topic, updating a working 2.5 ruleset to 2.6 manually takes about TEN HOURS, but I'm still glad that the negated nreqs are now gone. ;-)

~/.freeciv/test and really wanting "+Freeciv-soundspec-Devel-2014.Mar.13" also in dunnoob.soundspec if that also exists.

Otherwise it creates only "C:\Users\sysop\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Freeciv-2.5.99-alpha+r31157-gtk2\stderr.txt", cf. http://gna.org/bugs/?20738

~/.freciv/test instead of ~/.freeciv/2.6 for the alpha test, or is the test directory at ./data/../test (well, that should b all plausible places, I'll figure it out.)

I tested this in ~/.freeciv/2.6/dunnoob.musicspec
; Format and options of this spec file:
options = "+Freeciv-musicspec-Devel-2014.Mar.13"

artists = "\

music_menu = "dunnoob/freecol.ogg"
;music_victory = ""

When that failed (2.5.99 offered no dunnoob.musicspec in its "client options") I copied it to ~/.freeciv/2.5/dunnoob.musicspec. Still no effect, I copied it to ./data. That was visible, but apparently I didn't find ~/.freeciv/2.[56]/dunnoob/freecol.ogg, therefore I replaced s,dunnoob/freecol.ogg,stdmusic/freecol.ogg, with freecol.ogg in ./data/stdmusic instead of ~/.freeciv/2.[56]/dunnoob (that worked).

The new "client options" button in 2.5.99 gtk2 is nice. Or will be nice :-P

Oh, there's no '2.6' modpack directory yet, since S2_6 has not reached datafileformat freeze! Current builds use directory 'test'.

Umh, is this all about freesounds? You're right that now that it's changed for S2_6 anyway (technically as a 3rd party modpack, there was no new version in a long time as soundset format remained compatible) it would make sense to update event list too.

The musicspec issue sounds weird. In any case, testing with 2.5 for comparison makes no sense as 2.5 had no musicsets.
Have you tested if custom mqtx musicset works for you?
Are you sure you don't have not referenced folder 'stdmusic/' in your new.musicspec?

There are apparently three new sound events for 2.6, and four not yet alphabetically sorted events:

e_enemy_spy_steal_gold = "" ;;; new in 2.6
e_my_spy_steal_gold = "" ;;; new in 2.6
e_unit_illegal_action = "" ;;; new in 2.6 and out of order
e_script = "" ;;; out of order
e_disaster = "" ;;; out of order
e_achievement = "" ;;; out of order

Years ago (before 2.4.4) e_tutorial = "" was removed or renamed, I still had it in a modified freesounds.soundspec. For unknown reasons I also had no e_ai_debug = "" in this tweaked freesounds.soundspec.

A 2.5.99 alpha (r31157) client did not support a modified new.musicspec with music.menu = "some.ogg" (was soundspec music.start = "some.ogg") in the 2.5 or 2.6 modpack directories.

Adding new.musicspec directly to the read-only ./data directory was not good enough, the client still did not find 2.6 or 2.5/dunnoob/some.ogg,but adding it to the installed read-only ./data/stdmusic folder worked.

Please use the same search logic for music data as for everything else. Two suggestions for freesounds.soundspec:

e_destroyed (R.I.P.) can use the sound for e_wonder_build
e_unit_buy can use "freesounds/events/e_imp_buy-31377.ogg"
