What I was thinking when I raised this:

Goal: I want to start an all-AI game from the client, and watch it from that client.

By default, the pregame UI (Gtk2 for concreteness) comes up with a game containing a human player (me) and four AIs.

I try to absent myself from the game by right-clicking the line for myself and selecting "Observe this player", but I run into the quoted check.


Now that I come back to look at it, clicking the big "Observe" button (to become a global observer) is probably more likely to be what someone trying to do this would do; and that does work.

This prevents observing the player you currently control, but not switching to observing some other player, or?

Patch #7334 made it easier to start an all-AI game from the client. However, a user attempting to do so as a player observer by manipulating the Gtk UI (right-click default player, "Observe this player") runs into this check in observe_command():

Instead you have to do a little dance (go via global observer, which does not have any such check, but requires faffing with the selection UI) to end up with an all-AI game with you as player observer.

This action can cause irreversible loss of state (player's customisation of nation, leader name, city style etc) so I think it's useful that fumbling the right-click menu not immediately destroy that state. (Although a single mis-click on the "Observe" button can cause the same effect.)

Not sure what, if anything, to do about this. Not treating as 2.5.5 blocker even though patch #7334 will debut in 2.5.5.

(A player wanting an all-AI game from the GUI also needs to find their way to "/set minplayers 0", one way or another.)
