looking more carefully at RFC, it seems that I was mistaken when I said that apparently To and Cc: should not be encoded.

In fact, for the headers To and Cc:, I think the way to go is to decode utf8 and make sure there are only ascii characters within the name (unless we are sure that I was not careful enough while reading the RFC - maybe I did because it's quite probable that many persons set their name in their mail client with some non-ascii characters).

Apart from that, my problem in gnus is fixed. I had font selected that apparently were not ok with utf8 (why is still a mystery to me: it's no like if it was about printing specific characters).

Well, I checked the RFCs and I seemed to me that it is discouraged to encode stuff in To/From fields. Apparently, it is ok only for subject and comments headers. That's why I put no encoding for it (I did initially).

It seems there's another issue now. The To: header gets encoded in UTF-8 as well if there's a name in the distribution list with special characters. At least on my system this displays as an empty To: header. Emails to people with all-ASCII-names are not affected.

I noticed this when I sent an email to the ViewArch support request (support #188), which includes a guy named Ɓukasz.

Can anyone confirm this?

It must be checked with different mailers (strange with some mailers that are supposed to read utf-8 without trouble).

Take a look at bug #2440
