Closing as I concluded that this is actually a side-effect of the middle button on my stylus being way too easy to depress.

The behaviour is this:

  • using straight line mode, I make a stroke (usually horizontal in angle)
  • That stroke is correctly completed, but occasionally appears to immediately knock mypaint out of straight line mode
  • nonsense strokes are drawn between the straight-line end and where I next press the pen down.
  • After this, MyPaint demonstrates the cursor and behaviour of normal freehand drawing
