We deciced that the left search box will always be "site wide", and not restricted to groups. We'll add a search page for "group wide" searches.

The overall behavior of the searchbox is annoying. It is not clear whether it search on items of the current projects or not.

And the select box size should not change, it make the page being rendered very differently depending on the browsers.
