Gna! hardware failure

Item posted by Vincent Caron <zerodeux> on Tue 14 Feb 2012 06:55:00 PM UTC.

Gna! was down from Wednesday Feb. 8 circa 11pm until Tuesday Feb. 14 at 6:44 pm.

The hardware had a fatal failure while rebooting after an OS upgrade. It was fixed by parts from another identical server, and the service was restarted as-is (but fully upgraded).

The hosting company, Bearstech, is operating most of its hardware with Lights-out-Management and using virtualization and other techniques to "logically" fail and replace faulty hardware in a matter of minutes, then only changing parts on a weekly basis. Unfortunately Gna! is running on an old donated hardware which does not have the required features...

On the other hand the hardware lived a long and intense 6-years life, which is a rather good figure.

We are looking forward to upgrading our hardware to handle the next failures more gracefully.
