I was hoping that they might have been divided into sets like "Classical"/"Medieval"/"Modern", but it doesn't look like it.

Nation conflicts are AIUI quite weak and basically don't apply to human players choosing nations -- they just affect random nation selection. If we set them, it would give the right result in single-player games, though.

I'm not sure if it would be equivalent to our nation sets (all nations need to be from the same set - set having one nation of each color) or nation conflicts (at most one nation from the set can be in the game - set having all the nations with the same color).

I wonder if we could define some nation sets to get round that. I haven't checked how this worked in civ2 though.

If so, too late for 2.5.

Here's civ/2 color chart if we want to take compatibility to that level. The catch is that several nations use same colors as in civ/2 they could not exist in the same game.

Maybe, and in any case it would make it easier to recognize nations if you play with the same ruleset a lot - colors wouldn't change from game to game.

Now civ1/civ2 have their own small, self-contained sets of nations (size 16/23), for 2.5+, perhaps we could define nation<->colour mappings as we did for the Alien World ruleset in patch #3724? Would that be more authentic?
