I don't think the AI knows how to deal with units that can convert (or at least I found no hits for ACTIVITY_CONVERT and similar terms in the AI code).

Of listed demoset features I'm not aware of any ruleset that uses calendar effects in a way not tied to turns (so that calendar advancement goes the same years in every game)

Also remember that Alien ruleset was meant to be very distinct ruleset from the traditional ones. Unused features were taken to use just for the sake of them in the early development until it entered the phase where we try to make it to really work (including playability and balance)
I remember reading README.effects just to find effects that could be used in a different context (with different requirement types) to what their role in traditional rulesets have been.

And to add to the list:
- Victory effect, to give custom victory condition
- Styles tree in a different shape than "many initial styles, all combining to single line forward", with requirements other than techs known

- Most of the lua scripting interface
- 2.6 -> New extras (current rulesets make just minor adjustments to what we already had)
- 3.0 -> Appearing (special case: spreading) & Disappearing extras
- Unit capture (/bribe) + unit nationality + enemy citizen unhappiness -> captured settlers added to a city cause unhappiness

variant2 uses some of the listed features:
- Achievements
- Culture points (& victory)

- first_req for "Burrow Tube" to prohibit starting to build it in the middle of ocean

Here are a few other possible features from my notes. I've got loads more, but have to go now.

  • Enable Pythagorean diagonal movement rules (needs fine movement point resolution)
  • Wonder giving Not_Tech_Source effect
  • Small wonder giving Gov_Center effect
  • Enable gameloss_style
  • More use of unit capture and unit nationality (perhaps a combat effect based on captured units' barbarian nationality)
  • Make lake flooding strategic
  • Unit retirement
  • Achievements
  • Enable culture points and victory
  • Use Resource requirement for some effect (maybe city-ranged)
  • Use first_reqs for a "road".
    • The example I thought of is an oil pipeline, requiring an oil resource to start and delivering a bonus when it reaches city centres. However, narratively it's problematic if pillaging it doesn't stop the flow of oil! Maybe just make it unpillageable.
  • Add some policies!

First couple of ideas are use of animals and unit conversion.
These basically require art, so I've asked for help on the forum.
I won't repeat the ideas here; what we end up with depends partly on what people feel like drawing.

I think we should be much bolder about adding use of new game engine features to the "experimental" ruleset (or whatever replaces it per patch #6452), even if we have to crowbar them in.

I'd like to have a go at this for 2.6. As well as new 2.6 features, there are some existing (pre-2.6) features that we (nor anyone else) is using.

This is a vague metaticket to collect neglected features, and ideas for how to exhibit them. Actual patches should go in other more specific tickets.
