I guess anonymous AI players would still take their player (and notionally user) names from nation definitions.

In some contexts (particularly multiplayer), having separate player/leader names and usernames is a distraction; you have to remember which user goes by which leader name.

From where we are now, I think the simplest way to achieve this would be a server option that enforces that player and user names are the same (or at least related trivially by case conversion), so that players/nations are referred to by their user names in-game.

This setting should be sent over the network, so that messages and UI can adapt by removing redundant information, disabling leader name UI in the Pick Nation dialog, etc.

Delegation would need to be an exception from this invariant. I don't know if there are other cases (observers?) which would be awkward.

(That's not to say we couldn't still make the UX better in games with distinct leader and user names, but this isn't the ticket for that.)
