Advene (Annotate DVDs, Exchange on the NEt) is an ongoing project in the LIRIS laboratory LIRIS - UMR 5205 CNRS. It aims at providing a format to share annotations about movies stored on DVDs or digital files, as well as tools to edit and visualize the annotations. Teachers, moviegoers, etc can use them to exchange multimedia comments and analysis about movies.

The shared data only contains the annotations and instructions for their visualization. No movie data (neither picture nor sound) is stored or exchanged. Instead, if needed for the visualization of the data, pictures and sound clips can be extracted from the DVD. The user of the data is then required to possess the DVD to take full advantage of the analysis and comments.

The Advene GUI is for the moment reusing existing icons (mainly from opencliparts.org), but they do not always reflect exactly their function. We need meaningful icons representing views (timeline, treeview, trancription...) and other aspects of the application.
