We are attempting to create a new map viewer for use in Freeciv that can work with both a buckyball (a spherical map consisting of hexagons and 12 pentagons) and a plane consisting of either hexagons or squares. This is at present being created as a demo to establish the feasability of such a map viewer. However, the project will have a general interest to other games that may consider going this route. It is an approach that has been much discussed, but few have been ambitious (or crazy) enought to actually attempt it.
