cdcap is a able to tell you which devices (hd, sr, ...) are able to write a CD-R or a DVD-R. cdcap is linux 2.6 dependent, latest kernel should be better.

The software parses a special /proc file to guess which of your CD devices are able to write a CD or a DVD. This was usefull to me in a bash script where I wanted to know that answer in order to use cdrecord automatically. This is probably doable in awk, but my scripts where intended to run under a RIM (Run In Memory) and awk was not available.
