A GNU/Linux system is, to some extent, like the Ancient Persian Empire: far wider than any other equivalent seen before -- a wealthy but not-so-trivial place to run.

There are nice graphical front-ends, to help end users. And there's Darius* trying to collect some scripts that are all designed to be faster and easier to use than the command line that would normally be required to accomplish the same task.

If you made some scripts (shell, perl, or other) that fit to this description, please propose them for inclusion by sending a nice mail to darius-dev

Darius Tools are split-up in different package. Each one is technically independant.

You can find them in the download area -- or, with apt-get, by adding the following line in /etc/apt/sources.list on Debian systems:

Darius Admin-related Tools

  • ictl, a shortcut to start/restart/stop daemon in /etc/init.d (stand for init control)
  • mrclean that remove backups in a directory, recursively
  • murder that kill a process given his, maybe incomplete, name
  • urlize that rename each file in a directory a or specified name in a "www-compliant" way

Darius Sound-related Tools

  • wav2ogg that convert all wav files in a directory to ogg vorbis files
  • ogg2wav (and mp32wav) that concert all ogg vorbis (and mp3) files in a directory to wav files.
  • cron-normalize that permit you to easily making sure that all files in any directories you want are normalized, using normalize and cron to automate the task

Darius Text-related Tools

  • latex2ps that convert a LaTeX file into a ps file (or maybe a pdf) and eventually show it with ggv or gv.
  • latex-fonts that generate files showing LaTeX fonts currently available.
  • html2text that convert an HTML file into a simple plain text file.
  • text2html that convert a plain text file into an HTML file.
  • memolatex that create Makefile to generate HTML and Postscript versions of memos (ex: summary of readings)

and finally Darius Misc Tools

  • cvs-mass that add to a cvs repository a directory recursively, which is very usefull when you have a directory with tons of files and subdirectories to add (cvs handle very horribly this kind of operations)
  • euro2other that can convert any old european currency into euro (vice versa)
  • mkthumb that create a thumbnail for a given image

(* Darius was King from 522BC to 486BC - he done much work to enhance the administration and cohesion of the Empire)
