If you went as far as providing a patch to fix a current issue, maybe you'd be interested in having rights on the server to complete the fix.
I'm unfamiliar with the current setup as it has been quite a long time I have done dick about it but I don't think people would be annoyed by your contribution.

I tried getting a nasty bug fixed in Savane and even provide a simple patch to fix the obvious error (, but Savane seems to have gone the way of the Dodo so the flagging option may not go too far. Blocking the creation of new bots might be most productive - the list I made below contains most of the current and active bots so blocking new ones and deleting these ones might be enough to slow down the spam. Deleting the news comments from deleted accounts would clean up the current mess.

The news tracker is the only real remnant of Sourceforge and is the only part where you can spam at will (no way to disallow post to non member etc).

I wont keep manually deleting them, we should instead write a script

  • to ban all users having only posted to news
  • ban IP if it makes sense (if it comes from the same ones)
  • delete all news comments that come from deleted accounts

We could also change the Savane code to make it easier to flag and hide spam too but I'm not sure people currently maintaining it, if any, have any interest into that.

I actually lack the time to fix this proper but I'll try to look into it. It should be easy to write.

Zerodeux as well, there's a tonne of new bots at ttps:// (again just add the 'h' to the start). The amount of spam seems to be exponentially increasing from about Dec 2011 to today. Something needs to be done before the forums become unusable.

I get the impression that this bot net is spamming the posts by the Gna! admins the hardest. Old posts by yeupou and beuc seem to be hit the hardest.

It looks to me like one human has set up a tonne of fake users for this. I'm hunting down a few more. For example the following accounts have spammed the post (these ones also spammed your post

And some others that I found by Google searching " awesome 'posted by'" (in brackets is a forum post they have spammed, I just removed the 'h' at the start to avoid helping the bots collect more hits): (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps:// (ttps://

I hope I don't have any legitimate users there. I like the name "becauseican" :) If you keep deleting, I think I'll be able to hunt down the last of this related bunch of bots. Something needs to be done to block the creation of bots! This is very active right now, there are spam posts from the last 2 days in this lot. The number of forum posts is crazy. Can the registration question about GNU be changed? Can this be turned into a randomly selected question from a list? Actually, it's almost safe to hunt down every single user that posts to the forums! Or all users with a number at the end of their name followed by a single letter.

Doing a Google search with:

"john lee"

shows that the user was set up to massively spam Gna! All his messages are within an hour of the account registration, and the account has been silent since. Please delete!

It would be appreciated if someone could look into the user John Lee:

This seems to be a spam account, for example see the comment at the end of:

How can a project admin delete such junk on the trackers?
