I'm going to implement this. I'm a bit annoyed because it's no clear how the news database content will be in the future, as I think it would be good to use the tracking system to manage news. But anyway, it will not cost much if part of the code will go in limbo the day the news system change, if this day come.

On the PS: I forgot to update task tracker rights.

On topic: this kind of development should happen on a branch, as usual. Feel free to assign the task to you, send a branch plan to the list and go for it.

I think news items already got a unix timestamp stored, so we do not need new field to know if the item is old or new.
Also, I'm not sure it is really needed to mark if item has been read. If you feel it would make a big difference, I guess we could create a new table. Table makes people very very sensitive (as tables changes could break other installation), so please first send a mail to savane-dev explaining the changes you intend to make to the database.

I'd be willing to take this on, I think I know how it could be implented and keep its load down. We could add a news_time field to the database, and after x amount of time passes, Savane can automatically remove items from the page. The only think I haven't worked yet is how to mark if something has been read. We could implement a special table which marks read items, although I'm open to suggestions at this point.

PS. I still can't assign or open/close items

A my news section could be an interesting addition:

When the user log in, a special color in the left menu link will warn him if he got news.

What kind of news a user should get: news posted on groups he's members of, items opened on projects he's member of (this could make the item page lighter), job offer related to his knowlegde.

In a first time, I do not envision many way to configure what will be printed so the best would be to only print items recent enough.
