Another problem to deal with is the existence of several layouts for a language depending on countries. For example with French:

  • Azerty in France and Belgium
  • Qwerty in Canada (Québec)
  • Qwertz in Switzerland

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout for more information.

Finally it seems that it is necessary to always allow switching between Azerty, Qwerty and Qwertz to let people living in a foreign country teach their children in their mother tongue and with the correct keyboard!

Another alternative is to ship an additional keyboard layout that would be reachable by pressing Shift+Alt. This would be highly essential for countries like France where layout is Azerty: when you want to use DDL in another language, you often find yourself using a Qwerty layout on an Azerty one… Finally we need:

1. to access alternative layouts using Shift+Alt
2. a GUI to change/display keyboard layout
3. a tool to change keyboard layout directly in the ISO file
4. a tool to change keyboard layout once installed onto USB key or onto hard disk

They are not necessarily separate tools.

NB: renaming this ticket into “Dealing with alternative keyboard layouts”.

Modifying an ISO file seems quite easy, look at this page http://webconverger.org/blog/:

“The customisation steps are something like:

mount -o loop webc-6.1.iso /mnt/webc/
rsync -av /mnt/webc /mnt/custom
chmod +w /mnt/custom/isolinux/live.cfg

Now edit /mnt/custom/isolinux/live.cfg and change the boot command line with your homepage URL.

Now rebuild the ISO like so:

mkisofs -o /tmp/custom-webc.iso -b -r -J -l -cache-inodes -allow-multidot -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table \
-b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat /mnt/custom

/usr/bin/isohybrid /tmp/custom-webc.iso

We can also find a way to change the syslinux parameter in ISO files since this is easy in IMG files. This way anyone could be able to definitively change its keyboard layout without persistence.

Another alternative would be to create a new tool (= GUI) that make it possible to change the keyboard layout since not all children will have to change key mapping.

It is well-known that Belgian and Canadian French speaking people don't use our French keyboard layout. As there is no way to change it in the graphical environment, I propose we had some menu entries at booting. These parameters are passed to the kernel, so it seems quite easy to add some keyboard layout alternatives.
