Currently long URLs in UI are just truncated with ellipsis added to them. While long URLs should of course be shortened (if only to prevent broken page layout), truncation often strips off the most important part of an URL.

I propose to use somewhat more intelligent. Attached is a quite elaborate function that tries to ellipsize URL leaving most important parts intact.
