This "funny little edge case" shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the game rules of draining weapons by the damage calculation code. Contrary to popular belief it was introduced by Rusty's rewrite and not fixed by it.

This bug is just clutter. It may have been fixed in Rusty's AI rewrite; supposing it isn't, complicating the code to handle this funny little edge case wouldn't be worth it. Marking it Wont Fix; if anyone cares passionately enough, they can react by fixing it.

1.1.12 was before rusty's big rewrite of AI decision on weapon, I mark this bug as invalid

Presumably because it doesn't take into account that it would still drain some HP regardless of the victims HP.
The attached savegame has a 1HP and a 2HP unit next to the Enchantress. Checking the damage dialog shows that she will defend with the staff against the 1HP unit and with the bane blade vs the 2HP unit.

Btw you can use ':debug' mode and ':unit hitpoints=x' to easily experiment further.
