The error message no longer occurs I expect some cleanups Yogi did fixed it, so the bug can be closed.

The crash was not related to the OOS error. An older executable with a newer datadir weren't compatible.

The OOS seems to be caused by the fact that the checksum of the first recalled unit is stored and compared to the checksum of the next unit, which of course don't match.

This save loads fine and displays the story screen correctly, but after that when the scenario should start, Wesnoth crashes, apparently on this error:
