I didn't deploy it because we also have other things to fix on Gna! more generally, and it's not necessarily trivial. It's in my agenda.

It's good that SavaneCleanup exists, but I note that it has not been deployed to replace Savane, and I can't get anyone to explain why that is other than by hinting at murky politics. Why don't you actually deploy it to Gna? If what you are saying is correcy, it will both solve David Chisnall's problem and falsify my criticism at one stroke.

The Savane codebase is developped at nowadays, which you know about. What kind of idea are you spreading?

And, the Savane version we have at Savannah has support for RSS feeds, as showcased by

It won't happen. I'm sorry. As of late 2009 there have been no significant changes to the Savane codebase in two years, and there is a good reason for this: the architecture is severely broken and obsolete. This isn't to say that Savane is not functional as a hosting site, it's just that the chances of major extensions such as this are effectively zero.

See for discussion of the more general issue. We need a new generation of forges built on better foundations before the sort of worthy feature you're talking about will really be practical.

Can I add to this request some general mechanism for adding RSS feeds rendered to HTML to a GNA-hosted web site? A JavaScript RSS reader is fairly simple to write, but only works on feeds hosted on the site containing the script, which means it can't be used for things like adding the feed to a page, or a blogger-hosted project blog. If we had some server side scripting capability, this kind of thing would be trivial.

In the absence of it, would it be possible to specify a list of RSS/Atom feeds somewhere that will be translated into [X]HTML snippets somewhere where a server side include can pull them into a page (and apply some CSS).

FYI websec does this and works quite well. See

It's not just about news. RSS is important because it's the only reliable way to ask a software (typically an agregation software) to watch a URL for you. In theory it would be simple to have a tool that monitors a given URL for you (such as the bug report url) and notify you when it changes. Unfortunately this just does not work for various reasons. RSS is more specialized as the producer of the RSS feed is supposed to know about the content of the page.

An example of RSS / tracker integration can be found in the modified bugzilla used by fedora ( ). It is far from ideal.

The trackers are already piped to mailing lists. Although mailing lists (or dedicated mail adresses) are not as hype as RSS, they are a good alternative. For people who really want RSS, I guess there is a mail2rss converter.

Anyways :-)

I would love to have a RSS feed for project news. Syndications are all arround the web these days so I think it would be a important feature for savane.

Nic Ferrier worked on RSS feed but I do not exactly what the status of it. I was in touch with him recently about that, I think I'll more carefully follow this back from vacations.

A RSS feed for news (both the "global" news on and the per-project news) would be cool. I don't run Savane, so it's difficult for me to implement it, but I could help.
